Prehistoric Rock Art Site
Tucked away in the verdant heart of South Goa, along the meandering banks of the Kushavati River, lies a hidden treasure that whispers tales of a bygone era. The Usgalimal rock engravings, nestled in the village of Usgalimal (also known as Pansaimol), are a window into the lives of some of Goa's earliest inhabitants. This prehistoric site, uncovered in 1993 after millennia of being buried under the earth, reveals over 100 intricate carvings etched into laterite stones. As you walk along the winding pathway and cross narrow log bridges, the rustle of leaves and the gentle flow of the river set the stage for an encounter with ancient bulls, labyrinths, and human figures. Here, in this liminal island setting, you can almost feel the presence of a community that once gathered to offer sacrifices, conduct rituals, and share stories, leaving behind an enduring testament to their existence.
