Overview
St. George Island, also known as Ilha de São Jorge, is positioned approximately 6.5 kilometers away from Mormugao Port and can be reached via a mechanized boat or launch departing from the port. Standing prominently in the midst of the sea, the lighthouse on this island soars to a height of roughly 100 meters. It's easily recognizable by its distinctive black and white horizontal stripes, and an exterior spiral staircase composed of 85 steps wraps around the cylindrical structure. In days of old, the island boasted a deep well near the lighthouse, serving as a crucial water source for ships that once docked here. Unfortunately, the well now stands abandoned and in a state of disrepair. The lighthouse's history traces back to its original skeletal tower, which saw the installation of a fixed oil wick lamp in 1956. Over the ensuing years, it underwent several modifications, ultimately culminating in the addition of an electronic flasher in 1999, significantly enhancing its navigational capabilities.
