Overview

In Goa, there is ample evidence of Stone Age rock carvings, throwing light on the movement of prehistoric tribes in the Mhadei and the Dudhsagar valleys of Mauxi in Sattari Taluka and Pansaimol/Usgalimal in Sanguem Taluka. The prehistoric site of Usgalimal, located in Rivona, South Goa, features rocks engraved with over 100 figures that date back to the Neolithic period. The ASI now maintains the site, which covers an area of 500 square meters on the banks of the Kushavati River. Visitors interested in off-the-beaten-path experiences come to Usgalimal to explore the quiet villages, winding roads, scenic views of the hills and forests, and the mysterious engravings. There are more than 100 figures - a mix of animals, human and labyrinths, that are carved on the rocks dating back to the Neolithic period. The State Museum of Goa in Panaji has created a model of this entire site. However, it is best experienced by visiting the actual site.
