Overview
The fort was built in the 17th century on the orders of Chhatrapati Shivaji. The fort was built because it had a strategic location at the confluence of the Arabian Sea and the Sal River. It was originally constructed to attack Portuguese trade routes in order to destabilize colonial power in India. The Portuguese later captured and annexed the territory.
