Overview

The Archaeological Museum and Portrait Gallery was set up in 1964 and houses eight galleries, comprising the Portuguese rule in Goa, the pre-historic and early historic periods of Goan history, the late Medieval period and more. There are also portraits of Governors and Viceroys of colonial Goa. On display are postage stamps, wooden sculptures, pillars and other objects. The larger-than-life statue of the Portuguese epic poet Luis Vaz de Camoes is particularly noteworthy. There are hero stones, sati stones, Persian and Arabic inscriptions, and Portuguese weapons (rifles, swords, daggers). There are also video shows available to visitors and a publication sale counter.
